Two of last year’s collectible coins issued by the central state Bank of Latvia have won awards in the 2014 Coin of the Year competition organized by sponsor Krause Publications, reported Numismaster.com.

The collectible silver 1-lat coin in honor of German composer Richard Wagner, whose career was closely connected with the Latvian capital city of Riga, was named the winner of the Best Silver Coin category.

In addition, coin lovers taking part in public voting for the Coin of the Year contest (promoted by numismatic portal World Coin News) also named another winner minted for the Bank of Latvia – artist Pauls Liepa's silver Last Lats Linear Calendar (365) coin, which the popular vote championed as Most Innovative Coin this year, though not entitling the collectible for a formal award from Krause.

The final judging of the Coin of the Year will take place after December 6, when public voting ballots will close for the winners of the ten separate categories.
