Latvia's hockey heroes face crunch Slovakia clash

The Latvian national ice hockey  team will play their penultimate game in the group stages of the IIHF world championship on Sunday evening against Slovakia, wth a win a must to stand a chance of progressing to the latter stages of the tournament.

The game in the Czech city of Ostrava will start at 21.20 Rīga time, with pre-match discussion in the Latvian Television studios starting earlier at 20:30.

With seven points scored in five games, the Latvians are fifth in the group, three points behind the current 4th place holders USA, but the Slovaks have one more point, making a Latvian win essential. Latvian hockey players will play the last game in the group against the USA national team on Tuesday, May 21. The four top teams in the group will advance to the quarterfinals.

The Latvian national team started the championship in the Czech Republic with overtime victories over Poland and France, as well as a regular time win over Kazakhstan, but has since suffered  heavy defeats against Germany and Sweden.
