Latvia beats Slovakia, still has hopes for quarter-finals

The Latvian national ice hockey team defeated Slovakia 3:2 in the last but one match of the group round on Sunday to keep their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the World Championship alive.

Goals for Latvia were scored by Ralfs Freibergs and Oskars Cibulskis in regulation time. Dans Ločmelis was twice accurate in the shootout and Kristers Gudļevskis had a great game in goal.

Latvia is 5th in the group table, but with a win in regulation time in the remaining game against the USA can guarantee a place in the top four and the knockout tournament if the Slovaks fail to score a point against Sweden.

The Latvian national team started the championship in the Czech Republic with overtime victories over Poland and France, as well as a regular time win over Kazakhstan, but suffered  heavy defeats against Germany and Sweden. The win against Slovakia places our team high enough to still have hopes for the quarter-finals.

In the group round, Latvia will still play against the USA (May 21). The four strongest teams in the group will advance to the quarter-finals. The medal winners will be announced in Prague on May 26.
