As reported, representatives from Stockholm's bid to organize the 2026 Winter Olympics have approached the Latvian Olympic Committee for the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track to be included in its Olympic bid.
Stockholm does not have its own bobsleigh track, which is why it has approached the Latvian Olympic Committee for the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track to be included in its Olympic bid.
Today, a Stockholm delegation met with representatives of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC), the Education and Science Ministry, Sigulda Regional Council and the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track.
“This is the next step in our historic process and we are thankful to our Swedish colleagues for their invitation to join their bid [to host the Olympics]. This was not our first meeting – already before the PyeongChang Games we met in Sigulda and there were talks also in South Korea,” LOC Vice-President Einars Fogelis said at a news conference today.
“This meeting focused on detailing the steps that both sides need to take to prepare our cooperation memorandum which we plan to sign in the first half of June in Stockholm,” Fogelis said.
Sigulda Mayor Ugis Mitrevics said that hosting the Olympic sliding events means great responsibility both for the Latvian central government and the local government of Sigulda.
“Building the Olympic Village will be a great challenge,” the Sigulda mayor said, adding that Sigulda is not afraid of this challenge as the town is developing and its infrastructure is already partly in place.
“The requirements that we heard today are acceptable and implementable,” Mitrevics said.
The Swedish delegation already visited Latvia in January this year to inspect the Sigulda track and said it was suitable for the Olympic events.
