September 16 sees registration open for the Rīga Marathon, for what is being described as the which "30th anniversary season" with the first Rīga marathon taking place in 1991, according to organizers.

A stand will be in operation in the shadow of the Freedom Monument in central Rīga giving potential runners an opportunity to sign up and choose their number.

A starting pistol was fired to open the season at 8:30 a.m., 8 months before the start of the Riga Marathon, which is now sponsored by the Rimi supermarket chain. The all-day event will close with a symbolic evening 5 km run through the streets of Riga and a 30th anniversary cake cutting.

Registration is also open on the official website, www.rimirigamarathon.com. As usual, registrations before December 31st, 2019, will be cheaper than those afterwards. The 2020 marathon weekend will take place May 16-17.

In 2019, the Marathon gave runners the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics and World Championships, with almost 40,000 running enthusiasts from 82 countries gathering on the streets of Riga alongside world-class running stars; the Rimi Kids’ Day races attracted almost 13,000 children.
