After three days of effort, the hackathon winner was the team 'SeaSweeper', which created a prototype for a robot that could independently collect microplastics found in open waters, thus helping both the
environment and human health.
The second-place winners were the team 'Health4U' with an app that would help patients manage and organize their and their family's planned medical visits, as well as give people the opportunity to learn about age- and gender-appropriate state-organized and paid preventive examinations.
The SeaSweeper team received a cash prize of 1,000 euros, as well as tickets to the forthcoming 'Riga COMM' conference. Hackathon partners Novartis, Rimi Latvija, airBaltic, Printify and Startup Wise Guys gave additional prizes to their favourite teams, while the winners of the Bank of Latvia's additional prize will be announced at a separate event.
46 teams with participants from 19 countries together with the mentors who helped the teams develop their ideas participated in the hackathon finals.
"It was exciting for us to watch how all the teams were able to develop impressive prototypes in 48 hours, solving pressing problems in the fields of healthcare, financial literacy and more informed consumption.
Going from an idea to a working prototype in such a short period of time is truly an amazing achievement!" said Riga TechGirls Startup Female Founders Lead Alise Gurenko.
