Latvia to get EUR 6.8 million for farmers' support

Twenty-seven member states will be granted aid for agriculture by the European Commission (EC), including EUR 6.8 million for Latvia, as agreed by the EU member states on July 11.

Latvia had previously requested EUR 11 million. Agriculture Minister Didzis Smits said that though Latvia only got EUR 6.8 million it was proportionally the largest amount of aid.

The aid is intended for industries negatively impacted by the war in Ukraine, the unfavorable weather conditions, the drop in raw material purchase prices and the overall market situation. In Latvia the issues were particularly severe in the dairy sector. The countries decide on the allocation of resources themselves.

The Ministry of Agriculture is carrying out an assessment of the industries who will receive emergency aid. The aid must be paid by January 31, 2024.
