Retail trade in Latvia down on year, up on month in May

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) and published June 29 show that, compared to May 2022, in May 2023 Latvia's total retail trade turnover decreased by 1.0 %.

Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 6.2 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) decreased by 1.3 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel increased by 10.9 %.

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 2.2 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to April, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in May 2023 rose by 0.6 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 0.5 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 1.1 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 1.2 %.

As compared to the previous month, the most significant turnover growth was registered in retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (11.5 %), retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (6.5 %) and retail trade in pharmaceutical and medical goods (4.6 %). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (of 2.1 %).

Compared to April, in May 2023 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 5.1 %.
