Change to European power grid could affect prices: minister

Synchronization with the European electricity grid and abandoning synchronization with Russia could also affect the electricity price, but the extent of this impact is currently unknown, Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis (Union of Greens and Farmers) said in an interview with Latvian Television on January 30.

In February 2025, Latvia, together with the other Baltic States, can completely disconnect from BRELL's electricity grid, which currently connects them to Russia and Belarus. The first synchronous compensator station in Latvia is being built in Grobiņa parish, which will be one of the necessary equipment for the upcoming transition. Compensator delivery is expected by May this year.

Changing synchronization could also affect the price of electricity, the minister said. Right now, it's too early to say how big the impact will be.

“Clearly one of the big challenges is that we have interconnections with Russia. And the biggest and most important thing we are thinking about right now is increasing our generating capacity. By increasing it in Latvia, we also increase it in the region. And we're working on interconnections right now. We need more interconnections to have electricity flow,“ Melnis said.
