Bulk cargos prevailed in the total cargo turnover in Riga port in January-September 2016, accounting for 15.661 million tons and declining 8.4 percent year-on-year. Liquid cargos followed with 6.534 million tons, down 20.5 percent from the first nine months of 2015, while handling of general cargos fell 0.5 percent to 4.678 million tons.
Coal was the main type of cargo reloaded at Riga port in the first nine months of this year, ensuring 33.9 percent of total cargo turnover. Oil products followed with 24.2 percent, container cargos with 10.2 percent, chemical cargos with 8 percent, and timber with 7.4 percent of total cargo turnover at Riga port in the first nine months of 2016.
In September 2016, the port reloaded three million tons of cargo, including 1.89 million tons of bulk cargo, 583,100 tons of liquid cargo and 526,900 tons of general cargo.
In the first nine months of 2015, the port reloaded 30.026 million tons of cargo. During the full year 2015 cargo turnover at Riga port totaled 40.056 million tons, down 2.5 percent from 2014.
Riga is the largest Latvian port both by cargo turnover and the number of passengers.
