Rīga Airport to reconstruct one of its aprons

RIX Riga Airport will implement an ambitious reconstruction project at the airport in the coming years, completely rebuilding the existing Apron 4 to provide a dual-use TEN-T infrastructure for civil and military purposes, the airport said in a statement on July 1.

The total investment is planned at almost EUR 40 million, the airport said.

The contract signed with the EU's Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) for the financing of the project provides for the reconstruction of the hard surface of Apron4 over an area of 80 000 square meters, creating ten different configurations for Class A-E aircraft parking, taxiways, and service lanes.

The project will also include the construction of an electrical substation with two independent inlets to provide lighting and power supply for apron 4 following the latest EU requirements, storage areas for aircraft servicing equipment in adjacent apron areas, an airfield lighting system, reconstruction of lighting masts and floodlights, installation of a new CCTV system and associated electrical networks, and a rainwater drainage system.

"We are pleased that the airport's apron 4 redevelopment project has received CINEA support, which will enable Riga Airport to increase the number of aircraft parking spaces for future development needs, further expand the cargo handling area, and at the same time contribute to military mobility, which is particularly important in the current geopolitical environment. With the development of civil and military cargo handling and rail infrastructure in the vicinity of aprons 4 and 5 of the airport, it is important to ensure the future handling of Class C, D and E aircraft and suitable aircraft parking facilities for them," said Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board of Riga Airport.

The reconstruction of apron 4 is planned to be completed by 2027 and the total project budget is up to EUR 39.3 million (excluding VAT). CINEA will finance 50% of the total amount, while Riga Airport will cover the remaining EUR 19.7 million.

The current apron 4 of Riga Airport was built in the 1970s and has limited use as it is not suitable for the needs of modern aircraft.
