'Vivi' chief: Engineer should be aboard new trains on first journey

While the old “Pasazieru Vilciens” vehicles weren't in perfect working order and also experienced issues, it didn't cause a mass traffic problem because the drivers could “revive them themselves in the middle of the forest,” Rodžers Jānis Grigulis, chairman of the board of Vivi, said on Latvian Television's “Today Question” January 9.

He said the company had not counted on problems as big as those experienced, for example, when the train simply stopped in the middle of nowhere, blocking traffic on the line.

Grigulis said that “Pasazieru Vilciens” drivers have become engineers in recent years who have been able to “revive the train in the middle of the forest” because there were “virtually only chunks of metal.” The new Škoda trains are much more technologically advanced and require relevant knowledge.

That's why the company has requested that a Škoda engineer be aboard the train on the first trip to make sure hours-long delays don't occur again.
