Police continue catching trucks in Rīga city center

Since the second half of January, freight transport has been restricted in the center of Riga, instead encouraging the use of bypassing. Riga Municipal Police has launched 324 administrative violation proceedings since January 22 for non-compliance, Latvian Television reported on March 12.

The penalty for breaking the rules is €30.

The most common places where violations are recorded are Daugavgrīvas Street, Mūkusalas Street, Krasta Street, the 11. novembra Embankment and Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment.

Most of the drivers penalized have been Latvian citizens, 180 in total. Citizens of other countries have been punished 144 times.

"Gradually right now, you might say, that number is decreasing, drivers are also becoming more informed, and also at the very beginning we put more resources into the control," said Ērika Verze, communications specialist at Rīga Municipal Police.

The number of offenses recorded varies according to the number of police teams assigned to control. That's between five and 20 cases a day. Most offenders are truck drivers, in rarer cases, log-haulers.
