Travelers' interest in free Covid testing at Rīga airport grows

The voluntary Covid-19 testing facility at Riga airport interests more and more air passengers, airport representative Ilze Salna told LSM December 6.

On the first day of it being available, around 20 people used the opportunity but on Sunday more than 100 travelers got tested.

The free Covid-19 test at the airport can be conducted at all times – if the testing points are closed, the test can be carried out at the E. Gulbja laboratory in the entrance hall.

Airport spokeswoman Ilze Salna said: "Passengers receive information about the possibility of testing at the terminal and [the airport] has informed airlines so they inform passengers during the flight as they approach Riga. The testing points are located in entrance hall E for flights from within the Schengen area, and in the entrance hall C before border controls for flights outside the Schengen area."

Due to the possibility to carry out free Covid tests at the airport, the first two cases of the Omicron strain were detected in Latvia over the weekend. There is still debate in the government on whether such tests should be mandatory for all arrivals.
