Five Latgale manor houses tell their histories

Around 2,000 manor houses of one type or another have been recorded in Latvia through history.

Once the demesnes of the nobility, they formed the economic and social centres of wide communities for centuries, but the twentieth century brought with it huge changes to the longstanding status quo and corresponding changes in the fortunes of the manor houses.

Today, some are in excellent condition after painstaking restration, and many have found new lives as schools, arts venues or community centers, while others are still slowly crumbling or exist only as names on maps with only a few shattered stones showing where a grand manor house once stood.

In this 'Feel Latgale' program from Latvian Television five manor houses in the eastern Latgale region have their stories revealed. At present it is only available in Latvian and Latgalian, but even if you don't understand the words, the pictures tell a story of their own.
