A third of Latvian residents express no interest in EP elections: survey

Since February, the interest of the Latvian population in the European Parliament elections has not changed significantly – both at the end of February and at the end of May, 32% of respondents indicated that they do not plan to follow the elections, according to a public opinion poll conducted by the research center "Norstat" in cooperation with LSM.lv.

When asked "Do you follow information about the lists of candidates for the 2024 European Parliament elections in Latvia?" at the end of February, 32% of respondents said that they do not follow and do not plan to follow the European Parliament elections. The same result was also shown in the survey at the end of May.

The first survey took place from February 22 to 25 , the second from May 20 to 29. In each survey, 1,003 respondents were interviewed. These data are representative of the Latvian population aged 18-74 who use the internet at least once a week.

At the end of both February and May, 6% of respondents indicated that they follow and are familiar with the candidate lists of all parties. In turn, 13% of respondents followed and familiarised themselves with the lists of candidates for the European Parliament elections at the end of May, compared to 9% at the end of February.

The number of respondents who intend to consult the candidate lists "later" has also slightly decreased since February: 33% of respondents did so in February compared to 29% in May.

Comparing the answers of respondents by age groups, in February, respondents aged 18-29 were the most likely (41%) to say that they do not plan to follow the elections, while respondents aged 60-74 were the least likely (23%). In May, the figures were 35% and 27% respectively.

European Parliament elections have traditionally had a lower turnout than parliamentary or local elections. In the previous European Parliament elections in 2019, 474,390 or 33.5% of eligible citizens voted, compared to 445,225 or 30.2% in 2014.
