Coalition talks will continue, says Levits

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš will continue to lead talks on building the new coalition, as follows from the words of President of Latvia Egils Levits after the meeting with Kariņš on October 31.

Levits said that, first, the future coalition – the New Unit, the United List, and the National Alliance – should agree on a memorandum of cooperation, including on the issue of a potential new ministry of Energy, Climate, and Environment, on the government structure, on officials who will take ministerial posts, and finally on the text of the memorandum to be agreed by the future coalition.

If a new Ministry of Energy, Climate and Environment were created, the number of officials would not increase as the officials of the department responsible for former ministries would work in it, said Levits. The president noted that there are such ministers in several European countries. Levits also said that when there are pressing problems in the country there should be a member of the government responsible for dealing with them.

It is only after these steps that the President will be prepared to mention the candidate for the post of Prime Minister, who will be entrusted with the formation of the new government. The president has also previously mentioned areas that are considered to be priorities for making the next government declaration, including security, education, national identity, and several more.
