Pavļuts confirmed as new Health Minister

The Latvian Saeima acted at express speed January 7 to approve Daniels Pavļuts as the new Minister for Health just hours after his party named him as the replacement for Ilze Viņķele. A special distance sitting of the Saeima convened at 16:50 and closed at 18:10 having made its decision.

61 Saeima deputies voted for Pavļuts, 3 voted against and 32 did not vote.

Pavļuts was Minister for Economics 2011-14 and has more receently been leading the parliamentary faction of the Development/For! alliance as a Saeia deputy, sitting on several committees and sub-committees.

He is also an accomplished musician, receiving his Bachelour of Arts degree in Piano Performance at the Latvian Music academy, but his Master's in Public Administration (MPA) at Harvard University. He also teaches a course at the Stockholm School of Economics in Rīga titled "Negotiation and Dispute Resolution" which is likely to prove invaluable in his new job.
