Osipova, a professor at the University of Latvia and former President of the Constitutional Court, has performed well in the contest for the post of Supreme Court judge, receiving more than 62 out of 70 points, Supreme Court President Aigars Strupišs previously said, noting that usually, judges' results in similar cases are just over 50 points.
The majority of the Saeima also supported the appointment of Osipova as a Supreme Court judge on Thursday.
The vote was preceded by a debate, which, like the previous Saeima term, referred to the decisions taken in the Constitutional Court during Osipova's presidency, in particular, that after the court decision the legislator was ordered to develop regulations to protect all families in Latvia, including those formed by same-sex couples.
The previous Saeima's decision to reject her candidacy at the time drew widespread criticism from judges and experts alike. The Supreme Court President pointed to the challenges of judicial independence in the country, and former president Egils Levits emphasized the independence of the judiciary from politicians. A series of experts criticized MPs for being unprofessional.
Osipova had now been re-nominated by the Senate Department of Civil Affairs for appointment as a Supreme Court judge.
