Europarliament President Sassoli to visit Latvia

The President of the European Parliament, David Maria Sassoli, will pay an official visit to Latvia from 18 to 19 August as part of a visit to all three Baltic States to mark the thirtieth anniversary of their restoration of independence.

On Thursday, August 19, Sassoli will meet with the Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece at the parliament building to discuss the current challenges and future perspectives of the European Union. The meeting will be followed by a press briefing by the Speakers of both parliaments.

While visiting Latvia, Sassoli will also meet with President Egils Levits, and visit the European Union House, where he will take part in a discussion with young people on the future of Europe.

David Sassoli was born in Florence on May 30, 1956 and prior to his political career was a well known Italian journalist in print and on television.
 
When the Partito Democratico (PD) was formed in 2007, he joined and on 7 June 2009, he was elected to the European Parliament as a member for central Italy. In 2014, he was re-elected as an MEP and was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament, and in May 2019, he began his third term as an MEP for central Italy. On 3 July that year, he was elected President of the European Parliament.
