Border guards in cooperation with State Police officers stopped a Mercedes Benz Viano minibus driven by a Latvian non-citizen in Asūne parish of Krāslava municipality. During a document check, it was found that 10 Indian citizens were in the minibus without travel documents, valid visas, or residence permits.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the carrier for providing a large number of persons, i.e. in one case more than five persons, with an opportunity to stay illegally in the Republic of Latvia (Section 285.1, third part, of the Criminal Law).
The person was ordered to be remanded in custody with the possibility of exchanging the remand for a bail amounting to EUR 20,000.
The Border Guard said that over the past weekend - on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - officials prevented 136 attempts by people to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian state border. Meanwhile, a total of 496 people have been stopped from crossing the border illegally this year.
