Two accused of espionage for Russia

On October 21, the State Security Service (VDD) requested the Prosecutor's Office to prosecute two persons for collecting restricted information with the intention to transfer it to the Russian Federation, the VDD said in a statement.

On May 2 this year, the Service initiated criminal proceedings against these persons under Article 85(1) of the Criminal Law, i.e. for collecting restricted information with a view to transferring it to a foreign state or a foreign organization, directly or through another person. As part of the criminal proceedings, the VDD has carried out criminal procedural actions at several sites in and around Riga.

According to the information obtained during the VDD investigation, persons illegally collected and passed to the Russian Federation information about other persons suspected of espionage in Latvia, who are under arrest.

One of the persons is a Latvian citizen previously accused of spying for Russia. The second person has no other criminal proceedings pending against them.

Both suspects have been remanded in custody as a precautionary measure.
