Four detained on suspicion of working with Russian special services

The State Security Service (VDD) has detained four Latvian citizens for suspected activities carried out on behalf of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), directed against the security of Latvia's state and residents, the VDD said in a statement on August 25.

Criminal proceedings against persons have been initiated on August 1 of this year in accordance with Section 81.1 of the Criminal Law, regarding the provision of assistance to a foreign state in an action directed against the Republic of Latvia.

In the course of the investigation, VDD has seized a large number of data carriers and documents.. Devices that are likely to be of strategic importance and could be used for illegal operational activities have been found.

Information gathered in the course of the investigation shows that the persons on behalf of the Russian FSB have carried out activities against the freedom, integrity, economic, social, and physical security of others.

Three of the suspects are in custody as a security measure.

In the interest of the investigation, VDD is currently abstaining from the wider comments.
