49 vehicle drivers sat behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol, and one under the influence of narcotic substances.
The majority – 33 of the total drunk drivers – were heavily intoxicated, with the concentration of alcohol in their bodies exceeding 1.5 promilles, for which they can now be held criminal liable following recent changes to the law, as previously reported by LSM.
13 of the inebriated chauffeurs, plus the one driver under the influence of drugs, have had their vehicles confiscated after the violation was detected, while 20 offenders face the potential of a fine equal to the value of the vehicle they drive.
During the three Christmas holidays, 15 drunk drivers were caught in the Riga region, 11 of them heavily intoxicated, 13 drunk drivers were caught in the Latgale region, ten of whom were heavily intoxicated, nine in Vidzeme, four of whom were heavily intoxicated, eight in Zemgale, of whom six were heavily intoxicated, and 4 in Kurzeme - two of whom were heavily intoxicated.
In the past 24 hours, 76 road traffic accidents were registered in the country, in which one person was injured. In total, 300 administrative violation decisions were made in the field of road traffic, including 110 for speeding and ten for aggressive driving.
