Latvian energy and transport companies come under cyber-attack

On February 7, Latvian energy and transport companies have been attacked by cybercriminals, national cyber defense agency confirmed Tuesday.

According to LTV, said that the attack most likely came from groups financed by the Russian government. However, the attack is considered unsuccessful, as the websites of several companies were only affected for a few minutes.

"As of a year ago, activists supporting Russian aggression, or attacker groups, which are most likely financed by the Russian government, and a separate part organized themselves and carried out cyber attacks, mostly with the aim of overloading the system and gaining public resonance, if successful. Today, one such attack [happened] against not only Latvian energy companies but also the transport industry.

Latvian companies are sufficiently well prepared and no significant disruptions have followed this," said Varis Teivāns, deputy head of "".

The goal of the attackers was to overload the websites of energy and transportation companies so that they stop working. If such an attack were to succeed, these attackers would use it as a message that Latvia cannot protect itself. However, the attack didn't succeeded so, clearly, it can.
