Ukraine-bound vehicles have batteries stolen in Rīga suburb

Cars being prepared to send to Ukraine to help that country's heroic defenders have had parts stolen from them at a compound on the outskirts of Rīga, police have said.

The State Police confirmed that on the night of October 4, cars intended for aid in Ukraine had batteries and wheels stolen from them in Jaunmārupe.

Criminal proceedings  and an investigation have been initiated. Police currently do not have information on the total amount of damage caused.

Police invite anyone who can provide useful information to contact them by calling 67950255, 67085938 or 110.

Reinis Pozniaks, the organizer of the so-called "Twitter Convoy", says on social networks that a total of 18 batteries and one set of wheels were stolen. Pozniaks also thanked the public for their support, which has already managed to procure new batteries.

Since April, it has been possible to give donations to the "Twitter convoy for Ukraine" project, which is intended for defenders of Ukraine. This project provides ambulances, jeeps for moving anti-tank weapons, and buses for supplies and repositioning.

Hundreds of vehicles have already been delivered to Ukraine. In total, 315,040 euros were donated for this purpose.

In future, security will have to be provided, representatives of the "Twitter Convoy" admitted.

Mārtiņš Dzenītis, a representative of "Twitter Convoy for Ukraine" said the thieves had done a fairly professional job.

Dzenitis said: "If you've had about 20 batteries brought to you in the last two days, and many of them are the same, then maybe report it to the police. If those batteries are somewhere in the area, then bring them back overnight. We'll consider this to be the end of the matter.. The batteries will be in place, we will transport the cars, everything will continue," said Dzenītis.
