NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has already said that Ukraine will not be officially invited to join the alliance at the forthcoming NATO summit in Vilnius.
“It just won't happen. We can debate a lot, but it is clear that there is no consensus among NATO member states on this issue. It was seen in the spring already,” said Rinkēvičs.
The minister said that the Ukrainian side is also aware that there is no consensus among NATO member states on this issue. At the same time, Ukraine has an important issue of arms supplies.
Rinkēvičs stressed that Latvia will do everything at the forthcoming NATO summit so that the decisions are “as close as possible” to the best scenario for Ukraine.
But there will be no formal invitation to join NATO Ukraine. “Waiting for a miracle from Vilnius – I don't know if we can do that,” added Rinkēvičs.
The prevailing mood in the Alliance shows that this issue could be discussed when the hostilities in Ukraine end, said Rinkēvičs.
