State Security Service repeats terrorism risks in Latvia are low

In relation to the threat emails received by many Latvian educational institutions, the State Security Service (VDD) reiterates that the terrorism threat level in Latvia is low. The service does not have any information indicating the need to raise the level of terrorism threat, VDD said on October 11.

VDD confirmed that there were no grounds for concern with regard to the threat letters received. The service calls on the public not to indulge in provocations and to remain calm.

“In the current geopolitical situation and in the context of hybrid warfare, it cannot be excluded that these activities are purposefully carried out by countries that are not friendly to Latvia. The purpose of such activities in the assessment of the Service is to increase the feeling of fear in the society, by increasing the psychological pressure on various groups of Latvian society and artificially creating tensions to destabilize the situation in the Latvian state,”

the statement to the media distributed by VDD said.

The case shall be investigated by the State Police, which has commenced criminal proceedings in accordance with Section 231.1 of the Criminal Law regarding deliberately false notification regarding the insertion or placement of explosive, poisonous, radioactive, or bacteriological substances or materials or explosive devices.

VDD shall provide the State Police with the necessary support in the investigation in accordance with its competence.
