Latvian Defense Minister skeptical of 'EU army' idea

Discussions on a joint European Union (EU) army may take place, but Latvia's position is that NATO is irreplaceable, Defense Minister Andris Sprūds (Progressives) said in the Latvian Television's Morning Panorama newscast on January 12.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has announced that the European Union (EU) should form a joint army that could engage in peacekeeping and conflict prevention. Closer cooperation of European countries in defense has taken a more important place on the political agenda since Russia's re-invasion of Ukraine.

Sprūds said that NATO is the organization that already brings together many EU countries, as well as non-EU countries, within itself.

“Latvia absolutely has no questions that NATO is the cornerstone of our security. Our military strength is NATO. Following Sweden's accession, of 27 EU Member States, 23 will be NATO members, so there is overlap here, and there is no need to duplicate or build additional structures here,“ Sprūds noted.

The politician believes that the development of the military industry should be considered at the EU level.
