New procurements for some parts of Latvia-Russia border fence

In the Latvian-Russian border fence construction, builders have been confirmed for about two-thirds of the fence, but in other sections, builders will have to be sought for again, Latvian Radio reported on December 29.

The construction of the country's eastern border fence and the acceleration of that process have received a lot of attention this year. The plan to complete the construction of the fence on the Latvian-Belarusian border on land sections of 112 kilometers in total this year will be fulfilled.

It has cost EUR 120 million, said Renārs Griškevics, Chairman of the Board of State Real Estate (VNĪ).

"Next year remains just over 30 kilometers more of a fence along waters. They are due to be built by July next year," he said.

A lot of work is still ahead on the Latvian-Russian border. It is a total of nearly 284 kilometers long; there is no fence along 180 kilometers. Construction of the fence is organized in stages and the price survey has identified six builders for construction of the fence over 80 kilometers.

The builders will be named after contracting. For the construction of two sections, the price survey will be held again as the requirements of the bidders have significantly exceeded the expected costs. At a stretch of more than 20 kilometers, the fence will be laid in partnership with the National Armed Forces. Construction of the fence is organized in stages, Griškevičs noted.

The maximum term of execution of the contract for the construction of the Russian border fence is 44 calendar weeks from the conclusion of the contract, while in the particularly swampy sections – 52 weeks from the conclusion of the contract.

The planned deadlines for construction of the fence on the border with Russia remain in force – it is planned to be completed by the end of 2024.

It should also be noted that the border does not constitute a fence alone, but also the necessary infrastructure for surveillance, including surveillance cameras and patrol trails. Additional equipment is planned to be installed until mid-2025.
