For the first time in the history of the Latvian army, the rank of colonel has been assigned to a woman, Ilze Žilde, Head of the United Staff of the National Armed Forces, said the Commander of the National Armed Forces (NBS) Leonīds Kalniņš.

“The first female colonel in the history of the Latvian army is a response to those who doubt that they will be able to succeed in military service and contribute to the development of the Latvian defense system,” the commander of NBS said.

In Latvia, service rank is assigned to the army and law enforcement authorities, as well as to the State Fire and Rescue Service.

Currently, the rank of colonel belongs also to the Deputy Chief of the State Police and Chief of the Administrative Board, Renate Fila-Roke.
