On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry's parliamentary secretary Jānis Eglīts (National Alliance) said young men with their place of residence registered abroad will not be drafted into the national defense service.
On Wednesday morning, at the committee meeting, Eglīts said that after the discussions held on Tuesday at the Defense Ministry the proposal was analyzed, and the ministry now calls on committee members to support the revised wording.
All Latvian citizens meeting the draft conditions will be subject to being drafted into military service, including Latvian citizens residing abroad.
This proposal was supported by eight committee members, one abstained and one voted against it.
The committee also voted Wednesday to move forward with the bill for the second reading in parliament.
The draft law stipulates that all male citizens of Latvia 18 to 27 years old will have to serve in the military, while female citizens in the same age group may join the military voluntarily.
