With mass public events on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, Latvia's and allied armed forces had hoped to mark Independence Day on November 18 with a series of celebratory flyovers by various planes and helicopters.

However, the flyovers were cancelled shortly before they were due to take place owing to poor weather conditions, the National Armed Forces said.

A group of Latvian Air Force and Border Guard choppers had been due to stage a fly-by in Rīga, along with two German and two Italian Eurofighters from the Baltic Air Policing mission and a US Air Force KC-135 refueling aircraft.

A Turkish Air Force F-16 was to perform a demonstration flight along the coast near Jūrmala.

Following the Rīga event, the German Eurofighters were to fly over Cēsis and Valmiera, while the two Italian Eurofighters were to fly over Daugavpils.

Meanwhile the US KC-135 was scheduled to fly over Jelgava, Liepāja and Ventspils.
