The report was approved in principle during a closed Cabinet of Ministers' meeting December 12.
The report points out that since 2015, the National Guard has been preparing its rapid reaction units. These units are made up of the most active soldiers who participate in exercises more frequently than others. The units are made up of a variety of specialists, and the units are beginning to develop their anti-tank, engineering, anti-air and sniper capabilities.
The Defense Ministry informs that in order to adequately train and prepare Home Guard soldiers, countless training exercises, camps, weekend training sessions and evening exercises have been actively organized the past several years, and this will continue.
The ministry said that at the same time, the National Armed Forces continue active recruiting, so that the number of National Guards will eventually reach 12,000.
The National Guard is the largest military structure of the National Armed Forces and forms the foundation of Latvia's territorial defense. It enlists Latvian citizens between the ages of 18 to 55 who wish to serve on a part-time basis.
