Latvian pupils did best in English exams, worst in math

Similarly to the previous school year, in the 2023/2024 school year ninth-graders have performed highest in the centralized examination in English, and lowest in mathematics, according to the first preliminary results of the State Education Content Center (VISC) published July 1.

On average, pupils scored 63.9% in the English language exam, and 43.2% in mathematics. The results in these subjects are lower than in the 2022/2023 school year, when the average result in English was 66.1% and in mathematics 50.5%. In Latvian, the average result is 59.1%, which is 1% higher than in the previous school year.

In the current school year, the 9th grade exam was considered a pass if the student obtained at least 10% of the maximum mark. In mathematics, 654 pupils scored below 10%.

Overall, there are fewer pupils this year who have not reached the 10% threshold in a subject, the VISC concluded in its assessment of pupils' performance. While last year 1,059 exam papers failed to reach 10%, this year 915 exam papers failed.

The VISC will further refine the results of the centralized exams for grade 9 after processing the final results and re-evaluating the papers submitted for appeal. Official statistics on pupils' exam performance in the 2023/2024 school year are expected at the end of August, VISC says.

According to VISC estimates, a total of 55,353 exam papers were marked this academic year.
