About 23,000 teachers to strike in Latvia

Around 23 000 education workers will participate in the strike organized by the Latvian Education and Science Workers Union (LIZDA), according to the application submitted by LIZDA on September 12.

LIZDA on Monday submitted an official strike application to the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) and the Labor Inspectorate. The strike is scheduled to take place from September 19. Teachers won't be at their workplace at that time.

LIZDA Chief Executive Inga Vanaga said around 23,000 education workers from about 800 institutions would strike.

In parallel to the planning of the strike on Tuesday, the union is scheduled to meet with Finance Minister Jānis Reirs and Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš.

As reported numerous times by LSM, after failing to have their demands met regarding compliance with predefined principles on teacher pay and workload, the Latvian Education and Science Workers' Union (LIZDA) have announced an open-ended strike effective September 19.
