On July 11, applications for Latvian language courses funded by the Rīga municipality are opened. Latvian Radio reported that this year, priority is given to Ukrainian war refugees.

Free Latvian language courses are planned for Rīga residents until November and will be offered to nearly 500 people, according the Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Riga City Council.

Latvian language studies will be offered free to those who have declared their place of residence in Rīga and Ukrainian civilians who live in Rīga and can attend. Language learning will be provided at A and B levels.

This year the priority group is Ukrainian civilians, but courses are available to other adult residents of Riga, but not to pupils and the unemployed. Information on the application for courses and their places can be found on the website “apkaimes.lv” under “Integration” under the heading “Latvian Language Courses”.

The Riga municipality has completed courses for more than 13 000 Riga residents in the project implemented since 2010. Places are usually snapped up very quickly, so an early application is recommended.
