Rīga Latvian language courses fill up fast

Rīga City Council's Department of Education, Culture and Sports has said that almost all places for free distance learning Latvian courses for the spring study session were taken up within 24 hours, but there are still a few educational institutions where a handful of vacancies remain.

"Despite the fact that the courses will be held remotely, the number of interested people was very large and the groups were formed very quickly. There is also a tendency for residents to apply to several institutions," said a council press release.

In 2021, a total of 1,043 people will have the opportunity to learn the Latvian language free of charge as part of the scheme.

As previously reported by LSM, more details of the free distance-learning courses are available at the official website.

Such courses have been provided since 2010. So far the courses have been attended by more than 14,000 people.

According to the information sources previously pointed out by LSM, and in response to comments from readers, while most classes are geared toward Russian speakers, there are four language centers that can provide Latvian language courses with English as the intermediary language under condition that there are at least 8 persons who can form a group.
