Over 100 dogs removed from inappropriate care near Bauska, Latvia

On Tuesday, March 19, the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) removed a large number of dogs from the Lieldeviņzare kennel in Bauska municipality for violations of animal welfare requirements and for persistent failure to remedy these violations. The dogs will be taken to animal shelters.

The removal of the dogs from the kennel is still ongoing, so the PVD could not yet give an exact number of animals removed. However, the Service estimates that more than 100 dogs are kept at the site.

The PVD has found that the animals are being kept in unsuitable conditions, without adequate food and drinking water, without a safe environment for the health and life of the animals, and the animals are being allowed to breed uncontrollably.

Lieldeviņzare had previously come to the attention of the PVD and had been repeatedly reprimanded for breaches in its operation which, if not corrected, could lead to the removal of the animals.

Repeated inspections of the farm by the PVD revealed that the infringements had not been corrected, the owner alone was unable to provide adequate care for the animals, and overall there was no improvement in the situation.

An administrative infringement procedure has been initiated and a decision taken to remove the animals.
