On Tuesday, February 21, during the meeting of the Daugavpils Committee on Urban Construction and Environment, deputies agreed that a new environmental site would be created in place of the obelisk dismantled in Slavas Square. The Daugavpilians were invited to submit proposals for the development of the Square. One of the offers was also the construction of a chapel, but the town plan does not allow it.
The Commission meeting agreed that the second proposal was more appropriate and fit well into the overall image of the city.
"This is a matter of decorations, of setting up plants, namely, could create an object in the form of three stones that would symbolize the past, present, and future," said Inguna Kokina, vice-president of the committee.
A working group is scheduled to be set up within a week, but the new plan for the improvement of Slavas Square is likely to be ready in mid-April.
