New species of bird found living in Latvia

A new bird species has been observed in Latvia - the yellow (Squacco) heron, reported portal latvijasputni.lv on July 2.

The heron was first spotted by the bird watcher Andris Erts and photographed by the ornithologist Gaidis Grandāns.

The Squacco heron was seen on July 1 in Daugavpils.

The yellow heron is small compared to other heron species, a height of 44-47 centimeters. The breeding area of these birds is Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Balkans, not least other Mediterranean lands, and the Middle East and Africa.
