Shiny teeth are not always healthy, doctors warn

Doctors are raising alarms about the tendency of young people to decorate their teeth in beauty salons. Only dentists are allowed to apply tooth jewels, but this recommendation is not always followed, Latvian Radio reported June 30.

Chasing fashion, people of all ages, especially teenagers, find ways to save a buck and beautify themselves unprofessionally.  In such cases, serious health problems can emerge, which will later steal time and money.

"Where tooth jewelry is put on - it certainly shouldn't be done in beauty salons. It needs to be done in medical treatment and dental offices, and it needs to be done by medical practitioners.

"I would ask both teenagers and parents to think about it, because that glued-on jewel on your tooth is supposedly nothing difficult, but often beauticians do it wrong. Consequently, there may be major problems for the tooth, dental health," said Andis Paeglitis, vice President of the Latvian Dental Association.

According to Darja Ķīse, a dental practitioner at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Institute of Stomatology, a company offering to beautify teeth is active on social networks. Plus, according to the firm's "specialist," it can also be done safely by someone who hasn't mastered the profession of dentistry. Ķīse said the manipulation had nothing to do with the field of cosmetology, as all procedures are carried out only by a certified doctor who can be found on the medical practitioners register. It is governed by law. The Latvian Radio News Service carried out an inspection of the abovementioned person in this register, and the results of the search were unsuccessful.

"Putting such crystals to children and young people's [teeth], as well as adults, requires a number of factors to be adhered to," explained Darja Ķīse, a dentist at the RSU Institute of Stomatology.

"Skyce [jewel-producing firm] gluing is limited by a number of enamel conditions such as cracks or increased tooth sensitivity. During the gluing of these jewels, a certain strict protocol shall be observed which cannot be implemented outside the dentist's office.

"In addition, this person claims that she is also training other people, which is absolutely unacceptable, and in this situation, there is a spread of misinformation and misleading the public that any person can do it right now," said Ķīse.

Tatjana Juškus, CEO of Dental Art Ltd, told Latvian Radio about how to put the jewel on properly.

"We can only put a crystal on healthy teeth. The specialist also tells you what hygiene should be like afterward. The main thing after applying the jewel is to observe good hygiene. At our clinic, the crystals are put by the hygienists, so the person signs in, comes for a visit. The hygienist then assesses whether you can put a crystal on your teeth because of course we only put on healthy teeth. Not on top of holes because the crystal isn't meant to cover the hole. It is treated with special materials, then a crystal is chosen and a special adhesive is applied to the tooth, a dental glue, it is not superglue. Then the removal also happens only in the dentist's office," Juškus said.

In cases where jewels are applied elsewhere, outside the doctor's office, the negative consequences can manifest, for example, in poor hygiene or if inappropriate materials or glue is used, there can be infections or an allergic reaction.
