Brazilian Covid-19 strain discovered in Latvia

The 'Brazilian' strain of Covid-19 has been discovered in Latvia for the first time, Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) epidemiologist Jurijs Perevoščikovs said at the government meeting April 27.

Perevoščikovs said that the Brazilian strain had been confirmed in a long-distance driver. The infection occurred at the end of March abroad, most likely in Italy.

This is the only case of the Brazilian strain so far in Latvia, said Perevoščikovs.

The strain found in Brazil is similar to that of the South African strain, which is more contagious than the original coronavirus, and Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines are less effective against it, according to the epidemiologist.
