Covid-19 morbidity in Latvia keeps rising

The number of Covid-19 cases has been rising for the fifth consecutive week, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC)'s information published August 23.

During the last week, from August 16 to 22, the number of Covid-19 cases increased by 31.7%. 8,389 tests were conducted per day on average (7,900 the week before). An average of 132 new cases were detected daily, instead of the  100 cases the week before.

In the last week, an average of eight Covid-19 patients per day (the week before– 7) were hospitalized and an average of 71 people were treated in hospitals daily (previously – 62).

In the last two weeks, from August 9 to 22, high increases in morbidity continue to persist among children aged 0-9 and 10 to 19. The incidence of Covid-19 is also increasing in other age groups.

Last week, increases in morbidity have been observed in all regions, particularly in Rīga and Vidzeme. The reproduction factor of Covid-19 infection (R) in the week ended was 1.20 (previously 1.23).

770 or 83% of the infected people had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed the vaccination course, while 153 people, or 17%, had been vaccinated.

The number of imported Covid-19 cases (68) decreased slightly (114 the week before), representing 7.4% of all newly identified cases in Latvia. In the period from 12 July to 22 August, the most infected people came from Turkey (75 cases), Britain (47), Russia (42), Spain (38), Georgia (26), and Lithuania (17).
