The highest daily total so far remains December 31, when 1,861 new infections were confirmed, but Wednesday's figure is among the highest recorded so far.
The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 45,171.
Of 13,946 tests carried out in the last 24 hours (the largest number so far), 8.8% were positive, up on the 6.7% rate the previous day.

Unfortunately, 32 more deaths were also confirmed January 6. Of those, one person was aged 45-50, two were aged 50-60, seven were aged 60-70, seven were aged 75-80, eleven were aged 80-90 and four were aged 90-95.
In total 754 people have now died in Latvia as a result of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
The National Health Service (NVD) said that during the last 24 hours 845 people were vaccinated, bringing the total so far to 3,803. The number of vaccinated people published on a daily basis is subject to fluctuation, because data on vaccination is entered into the e-health system within one to five working days after the fact of vaccination.

The NVD also said that 1,134 Covid-19 patients are currently treated in Latvia's hospitals. Of that number, 66 have severe symptoms of the disease.
Meanwhile in Lithuania 2,717 new cases of COVID-19 and 27 deaths were recorded Wednesday, and in Estonia the figures were 723 cases and 3 deaths.

Use of nose and mouth coverings is compulsory in all public places indoors, including workplaces, and there are restrictions on what goods can be bought from stores.
