“Whether the tightest restrictions in place around the end of the year have worked, let us see at the end of the week or next week,” said Dumpis.
The infectologist said that the incubation period for the virus is around five days and usually at least two incubation periods should be waited to see the incidence rates. Consequently, the effect of the restrictions could be seen in the second half of this week or next week.
“Limits are one thing, the other thing is to observe them. There's that problem. Limits are there not to humiliate people, but to reduce infection,” Dumpis said.
Hospitals are also raising overload alert. “The solution is to reduce numbers. We have no other solutions.
We have to get this [Covid-19] number down – whatever it takes. Because hospitals will not be able to function for a long time in this way,” said Dumpis.
Some patients remain in the hospital for a long time and the number of these patients accumulates. “The staff are getting burnt out,” said the medic.
