Latvia passes 1,000 cases of coronavirus

Latvia recorded 11 more cases of COVID-19 on May 17, increasing the total number of cases from 997 on Saturday to 1,008 on Sunday.

Of that number, 6 cases originated at a single homeless shelter in Rīga.

No additional fatalities were recorded. 

The new figure was released by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) which said 1,028 tests had been conducted during the previous 24-hour period. 

In total 88,405 tests have been carried out since February 29.

24 patients are in hospital, most of whom have moderate symptoms of the disease but 3 of whom are designated as being in a serious condition. 

So far 19 deaths of patients with coronavirus have been recorded and 662 patients have recovered from infection.
