Wednesday brought 9,143 new confirmed cases according to the latest figures from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). That number represents an increase of more than 3,000 on Tuesday's total of 6,097 cases which was itself a new record.

Of 28,009 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, almost a third (32.6%) were positive. The 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population also surged to a record level, climbing from 2,885 Tuesday to 3,239 Wednesday, by far the highest figure of the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic 354,734 Covid cases have been recorded among Latvia's 1.9 million population.
Fourteen more Covid-related deaths were confirmed, all of people aged 40 or over. Four of the dead were fully vaccinated. The total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 4,828.
Wednesday data from the National Health Service show 761 patients being treated in hospital (down on 778 the previous day) with 111 patients admitted and 115 discharged during the last 24 hours. 79 patients are displaying serious symptoms.

In the other Baltic states, Estonia recorded nearly 6,000 new cases during the last 24 hours while Lithuania, like Latvia, reported more than 9,000 cases.

Latvia is also part of the European Union's wider Covid-19 certification scheme. All arrivals to the country (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia. It is available at the website covidpass.lv.
