By October 7, the number of people infected with tick-borne encephalitis in Latvia this year has increased by 6.8 percent as compared to 2018, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

232 tick-borne encephalitis cases were registered by October 7 last year, while this year a total of 248 cases have been registered, said the Disease Prevention and Control Center, cited by the LETA news agency.

In turn, the number of people infected with Lyme disease has decreased this year. Last year, 412 cases of Lyme disease were registered, while this year the number has decreased 9.2 percent or 38 cases.

The number of ehrlichiosis cases has also decreased, from 27 infections last year to 14 cases this year.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center's communications officer Ilze Araja said that the number of infections increases in the fall as more people visit forests to pick mushrooms or berries, without taking all the necessary precautions.
