Official guidance for Latvians still in Ukraine

Take note – story published 2 years and 8 months ago

Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued official guidance to Latvian nationals still in
Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion. It is reproduced below:

On 24 February 2022 in the morning, an unprovoked large-scale military aggression was launched on Ukraine. This is following a decision by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced on Monday to recognise the independence of the Ukrainian territories of Luhansk and Donetsk, and ordering in troops.

The Embassy of Latvia in Kyiv has been evacuated and a consular assistance post has been set up in the city of Lviv.

Once again, we urge Latvian nationals to leave Ukraine without further delay on their own, using land routes, while it is still possible.

If help is needed with departure from the country, please go to Lviv, the Sakura Hostel (near the post office, Nova Poshta No 17, at Shevchenka 323 b / вулиця Шевченка, 323 б).

For emergency assistance, please call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the round-the-clock helpline no. +371 26337711 (WhatsApp available).

The senior officials of Latvia have strongly condemned Russia’s aggression, while calling on the international community to put an end to it. Latvia together with the Allies will call for NATO consultations under Article 4 in order to decide on the Alliance’s actions.

Democratic Western countries and international institutions, including the European Union and NATO, stand firm in their position against Russia’s aggression and imperialism, as well as regard providing support for Ukraine.

Latvia is safe, we are not under a direct military threat.

However, Latvia must also prepare for possible security risks – an unpredictable refugee flow, cyber threat, disinformation attacks, energy resource related challenges.

We shall go on protecting Latvia and everyone living there.
